[Japanese]: JLPT Level 2 mock test
Hello again,

for some reason I really felt the urge to do another JLPT mock test, this time for 2級 (second highest level).
I'm pretty sure almost everybody is familiar with the JLPT, but just in case: here's more info and here's the official site.

As you can see there are 4 different levels now (5 levels starting from next year): (click to see a larger version)

Last year I tried a mock test for level 3, passing with almost 90% - showing that the level was already "too" easy for me.
I never thought I would be able to "pass" level 2 not even a year later (actually I took last year's test on the same day as the real test took place XDDD .... (((((¬_¬) )

My results this time: (using the JLPT level 2 of 2006)

Kanji / Vocabulary: 91%
Listening: 78%
Grammar/Reading: 58%
Total: 76,25% (60% needed to pass)

Actually I'm not sure if it's okay to be under 60% in any of the categories, anybody knows?

The Kanji + Vocab was really easy. There were only a few words I've never seen before and I'm not so good at guessing, I guess XDDDDDD
The listening was okay apart from some evil detail thingies.

As expected the grammar and reading killed me!
I didn't know ANYTHING in the grammar part! As I've already said 100 times I haven't really studied grammar at all so far. I actually just started with basic grammar a week ago.
With level 3 of the JLPT that wasn't a problem. I just guessed the correct answers based on what I've heard in daily conversation. In level 2 they have so many grammar expressions that you don't hear in daily conversation, so it's hard to use that "method" of guessing.
Nevertheless I guessed good enough to pass XDDDD

For the reading part I needed 15 more minutes than officially allowed! Again I've never trained to pass the JLPT at all and I think especially for the reading part you need practice and time management ... which I didn't have.
Some of the reading problems were okay, some were quite difficult.

As for grammar ... I guess if you just study specifically for JLPT 2 grammar, it's not really a problem.

So: I'm really REALLY surprised that I was able to pass it!!!! Even if it was only a mock test and I gave myself 15 minutes more than officially allowed, but .. WOW!!!! Until now I seriously thought I'm not ready for 2kyuu yet!!!!
The deadline for this year's test is October 2nd, but I won't apply. My mind hasn't changed. Maybe I'm going to try it in July next year. I should at least do 2kyuu once before trying 1kyuu ^^; ... Furthermore there are rumors that the "new test levels" will be more difficult starting from next year C= (-。- ) フゥー

What I have to improve: grammar ... but I knew that before taking the test.
I just don't like studying grammar very much for some reason (^^')> ......

Oh, last but not least. I changed a tiny little thing in my layout today.
<~~~~ You might already have seen it. There's a poupéegirl greeting you now. The cool thing about it is, it changes clothes / appearance every time I change it on the real website as well (*___*)

You know .....

... the zoom function is evil (¬_¬)
(and I would never wear such strong make-up but for the poupeegirl it's fun XDDD and okay! XD)

(<~ Can somebody please hit me and tell me to fuck off, stop playing with little childish girlie sparkling things and go back to my Japanese studies instead???!!!)

Uh, ... but it's almost midnight, so I'm gonna watch the latest episode of Orthros no Inu and then go reading a Japanese novel in my bed.

Actually it's to make it easier for people.
The new level will be between 3kyuu and 2kyuu level as people say the gap between those 2 was so big o_O

mtassarion mtassarion on September 27th, 2009 07:28 pm (UTC)
dude... you're such a scaredy cat :P
I'm quite surprised you didn't do too well on the grammar part. However, when I did level 3 I also knew twice as many kanji as needed so for me the first part was incredibly easy as well. It's nice to know it actually pays off to know more kanji. Also, I am very sure (95%) that you only need 60% in total to pass level 2 (3 and 4). So it won't matter that you had only 58% on that one category.

Is it still possible to enroll into the JLPT? I'd say that you should just do it, even if you are unsure about it. It's not like you win a prize by passing or failing it. In your case it's purely for your own satisfaction/knowledge so you can find out what it's really like sitting there.

As for the new JLPT. Level N1 is going to be slightly harder than level 1. Level N2 is apparently going to stay the same as level 2. Level N3 is the new level and levels N4 and N5 are the same as 3 and 4 respectively. So you don't really have to worry about it unless you were going for level 1.

Btw, have you ever tried doing JLPT 1 to see how far along you are? Because doing all those in between levels doesn't really mean a lot when your goal is actually to get beyond level 1 isn't it?
I bet you will get a pretty decent grade, somewhere around 55% probably.
超ちゃ人: cute panda: excited chochajin on September 28th, 2009 01:12 am (UTC)
Right now you need 60% to pass 4,3 and 2. For level 1 you need 70%.
I think they might change that with the new tests as well ;o; ... We'll see! :)

It's still possible, but I'm not going to take it this year, I really wanna take it next year in July if possible :)

No, I have no intention of trying JLPT1 just yet.
Grammar would be the same as for level2, just guessing.
Reading would probably be too difficult (too many unknown words). Kanji/Vocab and Listening would be interesting though :D
mtassarion mtassarion on September 28th, 2009 10:17 am (UTC)
no they're not going to change that. I'm pretty sure.

why are you waiting for it anyway?

If you just try a JLPT 1 test you don't have to guess anymore :P I've learned somewhere that actually doing a test on any subject is in fact a very important part of learning about it too.

anyway, this is one site with info http://www.japannewbie.com/2009/09/21/the-new-jlpt-for-2010/
超ちゃ人: cute panda: excited chochajin on September 29th, 2009 01:06 am (UTC)
I hope so :)

I don't know. Because I would still need to prepare for the test and right now I don't wanna waste time on preparing for the JLPT, that's why I wanna wait until July.
Does that make any sense at all? XD

We'll see ^^ Sooner or later I'll do a mock test for level 1 anyway.

Oh, thanks :D
kurikuribebi kurikuribebi on September 27th, 2009 07:50 pm (UTC)
Sometimes I wonder what level I am at...then I realize it would be majorly expensive for me, so I forget about it. Did you do one of those software practice tests or the online ones?

We're opposite lol. I like my grammar. I can read the grammar in the 2 preparation. What kills me is vocabulary and kanji. Do you sit down and write words over and over until you memorize them or do you simply read them? When I read something in a magazine, I remember the kanji and word instantly...but if I study...eck. Not a drop stays.

I also wanted to say that I own one of the outfits you have your doll in XD. Does your doll shop in Shibuya often?! Lol.

I tried an old test (the one of 2006). There are books you can buy (with the latest tests) or there are scans of the old tests that you can download (not sure if that's really legal, though XD)

As for Kanji I wrote them many, many times (using Heisig's method).
As for compounds/vocab I just read, read, read.
Of course my passive vocab is way better than my active one because of this, but for the JLPT that doesn't matter. I just wish I could produce better output -__-;

Haha!!! XD Good question, gotta ask her, I guess ;P

♥ Congratulations! I'm so happy for you.

I don't like grammar either and I'm not great at reading. My teachers say that kanji is the worst part of learning Japanese, but that's the only thing I like about it. I took a grammar test for a placement and I did terrible. xD I got a 1/3 of the test right considering I only learned the basic grammar for 3 days (and this is during trying to adjust to living away at uni). It was pretty tough~ I'm not used to reading and trying to understand so many words and particles, especially in a small time limit. (80 questions in 60 minutes ;~;)

I'm going to try and think more in Japanese. When I want to speak in Japanese, it never comes out straightaway or clearly enough. >_<;
超ちゃ人: cute: rainy day chochajin on September 28th, 2009 01:44 am (UTC)
Thank you *hugs*

Haha XD At first I was afraid of kanji as well and didn't like it because I thought I'd never be able to learn them all.
Now ... I think grammar is what's really difficult -____-
I guess we're the same then :D

Oh, my output sucks, too!! The difference between my passive and active ability is way too big -__-;
yuzusorbet on September 28th, 2009 12:26 pm (UTC)
So you use Heisig's method to learn kanji? My class is using that as well~ the only thing I don't like about it is that we only learn it's meaning and not it's pronounciation when it's used in a word. I think it's quite interesting though, using your imagination to remember it.

My passive ability is a lot better than my active one too. xD
超ちゃ人: cute panda: stressed chochajin on September 29th, 2009 12:54 am (UTC)
Well, that's true, but the idea of Heisig IS to split up the tasks and FIRST learn the meaning/how to writen and THEN the yomikata (readings)!
Of course, if you stop right after Heisig you haven't learned that much, you have to keep going!!!
For me it was way easier to split it into small steps! :)
After finishing Heisig I used a similar method to learn the on-yomi (no reason to study the kun-yomi as you learn those while reading / learning vocab quite easily).

I think that's normal, though.
In Japanese it's just such a big difference compared to other languages I learned so far (well, apart from Latin of course XD)
Firsa Asahi asahifirsa on September 27th, 2009 10:46 pm (UTC)
No you don't need to have a special percentage in any of the categories to pass. I'd suggest not to learn grammar for the test as there's so much that no one actually uses and so many trick questions to boot. With the reading test, first read the questions then search for the part of the text that should answer the question (it's usually easy to spot) and then just answer it right away. There's really no need to read the whole thing most of the time and time is what you'll need. If you're lacking time in the end just go through the grammar section with gut feeling and you might get more right then pondering the questions all the time.

I didn't learn for JLPT2 and passed it, so you should have no problems with it. Do some old listening tests to get an idea of the trick questions they have. There's always one or two of them.

Freut mich zu hören :)
Ja, was ich momentan lerne sind wirklich nur Basis-Grammatik und so ..... das soll mir helfen, mich in Zukunft besser ausdrücken zu können und hat mit dem JLPT gar nichts zu tun.

Lesen und Listening werde ich wohl noch trainieren müssen, bevor ich dann den Test wirklich angehe :)
Firsa Asahi asahifirsa on September 28th, 2009 09:34 pm (UTC)
Du hast dich also nicht für den Test im Dezember angemeldet? Warum nicht? Kostet ja nicht wirklich viel und wenn du's schaffst gut, wenn nicht ist nicht viel verloren? Ich hab nie jemanden gesehen der die Testergebnisse sehen wollte, es reicht das Dokument auf dem steht, dass du 2kyuu bist :)

Darcy: manga moldypotatochip on September 27th, 2009 11:18 pm (UTC)
Sorry to burst your bubble but I'm pretty sure you have to pass every section in order to pass the test, no matter what your final percentage is..... at least, that's what I understood.
超ちゃ人: cute: Love Song <3 chochajin on September 28th, 2009 01:47 am (UTC)
Oh, don't worry! You didn't burst my bubble at all :)
That's what I thought anyway and I'm not going to take the real test anytime soon :)
What I was so happy about is that it was actually easier than I thought ^^; I thought I wouldn't understand a single word in the test, so of course I was quite surprised ;)
Firsa Asahi asahifirsa on September 28th, 2009 09:37 pm (UTC)
That's not true because I did not pass the grammar section but did pass the test. If your percentage over all the sections is enough to pass the test, you pass. You could have 100% in one section and 40% in another and it would make no difference.
Darcy: nani mo ienai moldypotatochip on September 29th, 2009 10:49 am (UTC)
Really? I was honestly under the impression that you had to pass all sections.

I've taken the JLPT 2 twice already and failed both times.... but my average score was really not so great. Only section I passed was the listening section. Totally confident I will pass that section this year again but I wonder about the other two :/ good to know I can squeeze by even if I fail a section.

After doing Heisig I became a kanji fan, though ^^
It doesn't help you with the readings, that's true, but you can just go on with the reading afterwards using a similar method than Heisig's at least for the on-yomi :)
And kun-yomi you'll just learn when you start reading more and more :)

I'm not very patient, so I get frustrated easily: "When will that one day be??" I wanna be able to read that NOW!! etc. (^^''')> ..... *sigh*~
